Our source who was incidentally present at the Salt Water Café, the newly opened café ahead of Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, revealed, “Salman and Katrina arrived together at around 6pm. Both were looking extremely happy and it appeared as if they had arrived to celebrate the success of Katrina’s new release New York. She was smiling nonstop while talking to him. The people around them were left completely star struck and no one dared to disturb the lovers.”

The source further added, “When any one around would stare for long at Katrina, Salman would stare back at him/her. Generally the two used to be often seen at the coffee shops near Salman’s Bandra Bandstand house such as Café Coffee Day or Barista but may be they came here because being a Sunday those places would have been extremely crowded.”

Both were there for over an hour.

India became Complacent: Dhoni

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted that his teammates got complacent after polishing off the top-order of the West Indies, which nearly toppled India in the high scoring first one-dayer here on Friday.

http://www.magazinepk.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/dhoni1askmeany.jpg

India set a massive 340-run target before the host but had to toil hard to defend it before managing a 20-run win at Sabina Park.

“Most of the guys thought that we have won the game when they were seven wickets down but it was a mistake and hopefully we won’t repeat that. It was closer than we had thought,” he said.

About Yuvraj Singh, who played a magnificent knock of 131, Dhoni said, “he has matured as a batsman in the last couple of years. We rely a lot on him. He gets big runs for us in the middle-order.”

Losing skipper Chris Gayle felt that his should have capitalised on the good start.

Gayle said he would also have batted first on the dry track. “I think if we had won the toss we would have batted first because it is a flat track and the wicket seemed a bit dry.” Yuvraj said he exercised restrain to get set before exploding. “I was getting used to the pace initially. After getting 25-30 runs I was comfortable. I got the momentum and played my shots.”

Bipasha misses her boyfriend’s film

Last week, Yash Raj Films arranged a very private very special screening of New York, by far John Abraham’s most important film to date. Tongues began wagging attributing Bipasha Basu’s absence to the feud she had with Katrina Kaif while doing Race together.

http://www.magazinepk.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/bipasha-basu.jpg

Said a source, “It is true the two aren’t the best of friends, to put it mildly. And Bipasha certainly doesn’t want to be seen anywhere near Katrina, and vice versa. But this is her boyfriend’s most important film. And she won’t let her personal prejudices get in the way.”

Shedding light on her absence from John’s important day, Bipasha says, “I couldn’t make it for that special screening. I was in Goa shooting. And there was no off day. It’s a crazy schedule out here in Goa, and quite impossible to get away. We’re shooting the climax of All the Best with a crazy number of characters. You’ve no idea what it is like here. I barely get enough sleep and then I’m back on location. I’ll watch it as soon as I’m finished with this schedule in Goa.”

Bipasha has heard only good things about John’s performance in New York. “I believe John has done a fabulous job. Everyone who saw it says so. I don’t think I’ll be able to see it for a few weeks yet. There’s just no time. I finish in Goa at month-end and rush to Delhi. I’ll even have to miss my father’s birthday in Mumbai on June 30.”

Any regrets for not watching John’s best performance yet? “That’s okay. John has seen some of my films months after release, if at all,” she chuckles.

SRK refuses to step into Raj Thackeray’s shoes

Shahrukh Khan has been in the news for all the wrong reasons these days. Just on the heels of receiving flak for his alleged comment on Prophet Mohammed, his refusal to play Raj Thackeray has hit the headlines hard.

http://www.magazinepk.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/raj-srk.jpg

It is said that Shahrukh turned down the offer to play Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Raj Thackeray in the film Mumbai Tiger by Raju Kokate. Now, Marathi film and stage actor Ashok Shinde has been roped in to play Raj Thackeray’s role.

Shahrukh seems to be tired of all the controversies surrounding him. It may be recalled that many non-Marathi actors including Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh were targeted by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena not long ago.

Dhoni must get back his form

>> Friday, June 26, 2009

India face a challenge of redeeming themselves with a depleted side in West Indies, reports SportsCenter’s Muhammed Ashar Khan.

But the task seems doubly difficult with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s transformed batting style that has gone from explosive to calm and accumulating.

http://www.magazinepk.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/dhoni-inform.jpg

Dhoni was given the reigns of the Indian team in 2007 for his ability to rocket the ball over the boundary at will and perform in pressure situations. But ever since becoming the captain, his brute power seems to have disserted him.

The 27-year-old known for his helicopter shot that would sail to the back of the stands has been taken over by a mellow, defensive approach.

“Dhoni is certainly not as aggressive as he used to be and he will have to be careful about it because like this he will neither be here nor there,” said Chetan Chauhan, former India cricketer.

Dhoni owns the record of the highest score by a wicketkeeper. He hit a colossal 183 not out against Sri Lanka in 2005, to take over Adam Gilchrist tally. But after becoming the captain, the destructive batsman’s strike rate in one-day internationals has fallen from 96 to 85 runs per hundred balls.

Even in the Twenty20 format where you have to score at a blistering pace, Dhoni’s strike rate has reduced from 128 in the inaugural World Twenty20 to just 96 in the second edition of the tournament.

There have been times when Dhoni has come up the batting order, but he has been happy to let his other illustrious hitters in the team to take center-stage.

The captain’s extended honeymoon of a successful run for the past one year seems to be over with the team’s dismal performance in the World T20 in England. From now on, his every hit and miss will be under scrutiny.

Kick the butt before it affects your memory!

>> Thursday, June 25, 2009

Smoking can damage brain cells triggering memory loss and speeding up neuro-related disorders, a new study has claimed.

http://www.magazinepk.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/stop-smoking.jpg

“We found that NNK, a major nitrosamine and a potent cancer-causing chemical in tobacco smoke can harm nerve cells of the brain,” says Dr Anirban Basu, a scientist with Manesar (Gurgaon)-based National Brain Research Centre (NBRC).

According to him, NNK is present in all forms of tobacco and thus enters the body through smoking and tobacco chewing.

Explaining the mechanism, Basu said, “NNK turns into a cancer-causing chemical once it is through the body’s metabolism. It triggers white blood cells in the brain’s immune system to attack healthy cells.

“NNK does not damages the brain directly. At first it causes inflammation in brain cells similar to that which leads to disorders like multiple sclerosis,” he said.

The brain immune cells, which generally act as the clean up crew for the central nervous system, destroy damaged cells by realising toxins and engulfing them, he said.

“Over-activation of immune cells for a prolonged period can have adverse effect on the surrounding neurons and can even lead to neuronal death.”

“The result of the work is confirmed both in culture systems and also in mice model. This finding is important considering how indispensable a healthy brain is for a healthy body,” Basu says.

Cigarette smoke contains about 4,000 chemical agents including 60 carcinogens, many of which are also poisonous in their own right.

“This study intends to bring forth the detrimental affects of smoking on nerve cells of the brain and raise public awareness of the dangers of smoking and to deter people from choosing this costly habit,” Debapriya Ghosh, another research assistant with NBRC who was part of this work, said.

Happy Birthday to Karisma Kapoor

She was truly the blue-eyed girl of the Hindi film industry a few years ago.

She had it all — beauty, brains, talent, and that very crucial stardom gene. A true diva, she reigned over people’s hearts with her sensational looks and enviable talent.

http://www.magazinepk.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/karisma-kapoor.jpg

Be it in looks or on-screen performance, Karisma is truly one actress whose transformation has been phenomenal. She was born to actor-parents Randhir Kapoor and Babita, on 25th June 1974, with the quintessential silver spoon in her mouth. She was another rising star in the already famous Kapoor khandaan, the first family of Hindi cinema. Yet, Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter had a shaky start in films. Despite her lineage, Karisma struggled to get her foothold for a few years, but when she arrived, she did so with a big bang.

The energetic actress made her debut in 1991 with Prem Qaidi . The movie was successful enough for the young aspirant to be noticed, and she received a lot of praise for her confidence and screen presence. But, despite what seemed like unanimous approval from industry folks, Karisma didn’t have it very easy for the next few years.

Despite acting with stars like Salman Khan ( Nischaiy ), Ajay Devgan ( Jigar ) and Jackie Shroff ( Police Officer ), true stardom and satisfying roles seemed out of reach.

Then came the mad romantic comedy phase with Govinda. She starred with the riotous actor in movies like Raja Babu, Khuddar, Coolie No 1 and others. The films went on to become blockbusters but, Karisma was heavily criticised for her overacting, tacky dress sense and vulgar dance moves. The flak continued despite the fact that her movies made a lot of money.

Then the makeover began. Traces of it could be seen in movies like Aatish, Gopi Kishen and Bal Bramhachari . But, the big leap came with Raja Hindustani opposite Aamir Khan.

The role of the city bred girl who falls in love with a village boy was initially offered to Juhi Chawla but when she turned it down, director Dharmesh Darshan decided to give the young actress a chance. Karisma saw it as her big ticket to the ‘A’ bracket. She worked hard on her looks, her diction, and her performance.

She was appreciated in the film to such extents that post the film’s super success; people started tagging the movie as Rani Hindustani. Karisma’s determination, focus and hard work finally paid off. The accolades and the awards poured in including the Filmfare trophy for Best Actress that year.

Karisma ruled as the queen bee of the marquee for a few years after that. She continued to do her madcap comedies with Govinda but, there was a marked difference in the way she presented herself. The effect she had on screen was phenomenal with her lissome figure and cherubic smile.

Around the same time, she bagged Dil To Pagal Hai (again a role rejected by Juhi Chawla) where she starred along with Shah Rukh Khan. Karisma got to display her immense dancing talent in this film. The movie proved to be a vital turning point in her career. Yash Chopra brought out the best in her, and she was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Filmfare Awards. She won not just the black lady but also the national award that year. Lolo, as family and friends fondly call her was going from strength to strength.

She followed that up with yet another stellar role in Biwi No 1 . The movie also saw her in a completely different avatar, dressed in Kanjeevaram saris throughout.

Having explored the commercial terrain to the hilt, Karisma now seemed to thirst for more meaningful roles. That was when Fiza came her way. Her soulful character in search of her missing brother brought out the true actress in her. The role once again earned her a Filmfare trophy for Best Actress.

Karisma continued in the same vein with Shyam Benegal’s Zubeidaa, a true art house film. Her portrayal of a young girl who falls in love with a prince truly impressed the critics and she went home with the Filmfare Critics Awards for Best Actress that year. Post Zubeidaa , Karisma cut down on her assignments. Only Shakti, which was based on Not without My Daughter, is worth a mention. In 2002, the actress who had reigned over the Hindi film domain for many years decided to explore other arenas and ventured into television with the serial, Karishma — The Miracles of Destiny.

On 29th September 2003, she tied the knot with business tycoon Sanjay Kapur, and understandably her career took a backseat. Today the couple has a daughter named Samaira.

Karisma Kapur’s starry career is speckled with glory, success and glamour. A true star, whose light shines with immeasurable brightness.
